Summertime Rendering manga takes place on Hitoga island, with a population of only 700 people. The story begins with Shinpei who comes back to his island hometown after being away for two years. He returns home to attend the funeral of his foster sister, Ushio Kofune, who tragically died when trying to save a little girl from drowning. When he arrived, Ushio’s little sister, Mio greets him and takes him home. At the funeral, Shinpei learned from his best friend, Sou, that Ushio’s death may be more than what it seems on the surface.
The next day, the news about the little girl’s entire family mysteriously disappearing without a trace is spread all around the island. Mio tells Shinpei that before her sister’s death, they both saw a person who looks exactly like Ushio. A couple of days later, the tragic incident occurred which led Mio to believe that person is the cause of it. Later on, Shinpei and Mio recall an old myth on this island. The myth centered around mysterious creatures known as shadows that take the form of the human it encountered. If any humans see the shadow while it is in human form, they will die. This phenomenon is called Shadow disease.
After Shinpei learned about this, he realizes that Mio will soon share the same fate as Ushio. He immediately brings Mio to seek advice from the only priest on the island. But before they arrive at the shrine, they encounter the shadow in the form of Mio who shoots them both with a gun. As everything went dark, Shinpei opens his eyes and finds himself once again on the boat heading toward the island. It seems he has gone back to the day of the funeral and maybe it’s the chance for him to save Mio.
Final Thoughts
Summertime Rendering manga takes a unique spin on the time loop concept and adds in supernatural element hooking me right from the first few chapters. The manga is completed in Japan with a total of 13 volumes. Udon Entertainment handles the English localization, releasing 2 in 1 omnibus with both hardcover and paperback versions. Omnibus volumes 1, 2, and 3 were released on June 14, but sadly, nowhere seems to have it available as of this writing. I can somehow predict that this series will eventually become one of those hard-to-find and low-print manga, therefore I have included Amazon link to help you add this to your collection.
