Blue Lock manga takes the premise of the Japanese National soccer team being unable to win any World Cup. In order to change that, the Japan Football Union decides to hire Jinpachi Ego as the coach for the National Team.
They create a program called “Blue Lock” to train 300 promising forwards in preparation for World Cup 2022. Isagi Youichi, a forward, receives an invitation to this program soon after his team loses the chance to go to Nationals because he passed to his less-skilled teammate – who missed – without trying to make the game-changing goal by himself.
When all 300 high schoolers gather at the Japan Football Union building, Jinpachi Ego explains the purpose of the “Blue Lock” program and how the Japan National Team never wins the World Cup because of the so call teamwork. He wants to create the best striker among these 300 forwards and the only way is for them to compete against each other.
And thus, the beginning of these young promising soccer players’ hellish and unorthodox training set the ground for volume 1.
Final Thoughts on Blue Lock Manga
I am honestly impressed with the way the author referenced soccer legends throughout the first volume to emphasize the importance and realistic of the Blue Lock program. The art style and character designs remind me of Kuroko no Basket, so if you’d enjoy that, you will definitely have an interest in Blue Lock. Without spoiling anything, the first volume already has a twist that proves the seriousness of Ego’s training and the means to survive until the end of training. I think it also demonstrates the point of throwing away old soccer ideals and embracing the true way.
Although the digital version has been released up to volume 13, physical print finally got it well deserve treatment. Or maybe that is Kodansha’s way to celebrate World Cup 2022 by releasing a physical version in time for manga and soccer fans alike to add this to their collection.
